The Guiri Guide to Renewing Your Kid's Spanish DNI in Spain

How do you renew your kid's DNI* in Spain?

First, I made an appointment on the Cita Previa website. Two years ago, it was very difficult to find an appointment for a DNI renewal, and we ended up in the DNI office in La Tablada which is, FYI, sort of in the back of beyond in Sevilla. This year, there were tons of appointments available at several locations in the city. I made one at the Alameda de Hércules location.

Note: to make the appointment, you will need to input the data from your kid's DNI (or the parent's DNI or passport).

Second, I took Don Loco to get his photo taken at a  local photo studio.  It cost 5 euros for a whole sheet of DNI-sized photos.

Third, showed up for the appointment. We got there about 10 minutes late, checked in at the kiosk (you will need to input the DNI number you use to make the appointment) and then a ticket prints out with your number. Sit in the air-conditioned waiting room (it's quite small) and wait for your number to be called. Despite getting there late, we were called back within 10 minutes, which was great.

Fourth, your number gets called and you go to a table with a funcionario who does all the paperwork. He asked for the Spanish parent's DNI along with Don Loco's old DNI and the photo. Paid 13 euros with a credit card.  The funcionario takes your kid's fingerprints using a little electronic tablet, then they print out the DNI. They also gave us the old DNI  as a keepsake, which is super cute. Good for another 5 years!
