Fun Indoor Activities for Preschoolers in Madrid: Matadero de Madrid

In my on-going quest to find fun, indoor activities for preschoolers in Madrid*, I present to you the Matadero of Madrid

If you're looking for a large indoor/outdoor space for your preschooler to run around in in Madrid, check out the Matadero. Back in the day before kids, I used to come here for theater performances (which they also have). Le sigh.

Where: An easy walk from the Legazpi Metro station (which has elevators, woot woot)

Cost: Free

Logistics: The Matadero de Madrid is located in a former slaughterhouse complex built of stone and paved with cobblestones.  There are a series of "naves" aka converted warehouse spaces.

Kid friendly spaces: There is a cafeteria with this sort of stage/staircase thing that kids can go up and down on, and there's quite a lot of space to move around.  There is another nave with two exhibit spaces that is free to enter that seemed quite tolerant of preschoolers running around. They also have naves with rotating exhibits with paid admission--I went to the immersive Egyptian tomb exhibit which was very cool (although way too intense for preschoolers). There is also a cantina-style Mexican restaurant that is not very kid-friendly.

Notes: The area outside the Matadero is all paved with cobblestones, which can get slippery when it's raining/wet. Also, the air conditionining situation is...a little lacking in the cafeteria section.* Maybe they are waiting for it to get super hot. Right outside the Matadero there is the Madrid Río with a nice big playground.

Fun for Preschoolers rating: 10/10 recommend. It's a huge space with lots of indoor/outdoor space where your kid can run around. Easy access to bathrooms, great cafeteria, what more can you ask for? (Well, they used to have a kid space with cushions and tables and plants and now that has been converted into an adult art workshop, so boo to that.)

*May 2024 update: The air conditioning is working in the Matadero! Blessed cool air, just in time for the predicted temps in the 90s.
