The Fantastic Playgrounds of Spain: My Kid's Favorite Playground in Madrid
"The Pirate Ship Playground" |
This is it, Don Loco's #1 Most Favorite Playground in Madrid, what we call the Pirate Ship Playground of the Plaza del Conde del Valle de Súchil.
Don Loco loves this place. It is the poshest playground in Madrid--no sand here, all squishy bouncy material and it is very clean. There is a pirate ship structure (pictured) with a zipline, slides, swings, sandbox, and on the other side there is a small racing track for kids (>5 years) to scooter around, a trampoline, balance beams and a little basketball hoop. It is a really, really nice playground. There are also ample benches for sitting in the plaza, a fountain, and a playground for "gente de la tercera edad" aka senior citizens, (to help the elderly work on grip/strength). Wonderful shade under the trees, you can enjoy this playground in summer easily.
We have occasionally encountered homeless people sleeping in the playground structure in the mornings when most Spanish kids are at school. I guess this is a good moment to note that most Spanish kids go to daycare from a very young age. The only kids on the playgrounds in the mornings (9am to 1 pm) on weekdays will be tourists.
It is located close to the San Bernardo and the Quevedo metro stations. The Plaza del Conde del Valle de Súchil does not have any restaurants in the plaza itself. If you want to pick up a snack, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend Panic bakery, located a short walk away in Conde Duque neighborhood. Literally everything Panic bakery makes is good, but I especially like their foccaccia which is basically a delicious cheesy spongy square pizza. YUM.
